National Plasterers Council

Mission
The National Plasterers Council, or NPC, was formed to provide a voice and support for swimming pool plasterers. It's focus is on studying plaster surface problems and the writing of technically sound practices for the industry.
History
The National Plasterers Council history goes back to the creation of the Plasterers Council under the auspices of the Southern California Chapter of the National Spa & Pool Institute in 1988.
Under the work of Bruce Hughes, the Council grew its awareness in the pool plastering industry for two years, gaining support from manufacturers, plasterers, and interested parties, primarily in California. In 1990, the Plasterers Council instituted a membership system with dues, expanding its ability to provide benefits and pay for the expenses of the Council.
From 1990 to 1992, the Council, in conjunction with NSPI leadership, discussed the potential and opportunities of the Plasterers Council becoming a part of the National Spa & Pool Institute’s national structure. After many meetings and discussions, the Council board of directors and membership decided it was in their best interests to become a separate national trade association for pool plasterers. The Council incorporated itself as the National Plasterers Council, Inc. and in August 1993, the NPC was officially recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)6 trade association.
The NPC's original Technical Manual was first published in partnership with and under the umbrella of the NSPI in 1992. The first stand-alone National Plasterers Council Technical Manual was published in 1994. Updated versions were published in 1998, 2002, 2005 and 2009. In the mid 90’s the Council worked to produce educational videos for consumers that are also used as contractor’s sales tools.
In 2003, the Board of Directors hired a new management firm, moving its office from the state of California to Florida. A strategic plan was established to define the priorities of the NPC, which was again updated in April 2007. The result: the NPC established a nonprofit charitable corporation called the NPC Foundation, Inc. The Foundation is the fundraising arm for NPC research. To date, the foundation has raised over $2.4 million in cash and donated support.
A formal invitation was then given to NPC from California Polytechnic State University to establish a research center on their campus. Within a year, the center was constructed and operating. NPC established new ties with IPSSA, UPA and APSP (formally NPSI), including their representatives as voting members of the NPC Research Committee. In addition, the NPC was instrumental in facilitating the first ever Pool Industry Summit with top leadership from IPSSA, UPA, APSP and SPEC. The leadership of these organizations are now working together in areas of common interest and collaborative concern.
