Payan started work in the pool industry at 18, when he began cleaning pools, then was employed by a service company for 2 1/2 years before launching his own.
In 1987, Payan founded Payan Pool Service before joining IPSSA in 1989. After a decade in business, he became a California Licensed Contractor and passed the IPSSA Water Chemistry Certification exam the next year, in 1998. In 2000, Payan combined his pool knowledge with his Spanish-language skills, instructing a chemistry and repair class in Tijuana, Mexico that was entirely "en Español."
As a member of the San Diego Metro Chapter of IPSSA, Payan has served as rebate chairman, secretary and chapter president, a role he currently holds. In 2004, he joined his area's Better Business Bureau, and from then until 2007 was also IPSSA's regional director for the county. In that capacity, he dealt with safety, public relations, education and more.
During that time, he was also instrumental in editing the Spanish version of the CPO handbook and produced pool safety videos for IPSSA. Payan also worked with the media to spotlight pool safety on ABC, CBS, Fox News, KUSI and local WB affiliates.
2007 was a productive year for Payan. He was picked to instruct SCP San Diego's series on pool water chemistry, and also joined the advisory board for the National Drowning Prevention Alliance.
His areas of expertise include pool service and repairs, drain cover compliance and pool route management. He currently works mostly on the management side of his business. When Payan isn't dealing with pools, he coaches his daughter's softball team.
Payan's leadership and concern for the community has been honored over the course of his career. In 2002, he took home the IPSSA Region 7 Pool Technician of the Year Award, and in 2008 won the Community Lifesaver Award from the NDPA.
